Handwritten from Kyoto

A handwritten postcard from Kyoto, every month.

We live in Kyoto. Each month we photograph one corner of the city, print it as a postcard, write to you by hand in English, and send it by air mail.

From $8.25 per card, postage included.

How it works

  1. 01

    We photograph Kyoto

One corner of the city each month. A lane before the shops open, rain on stone steps, the first cold morning in November.

  2. 02

We write the card by hand

A few lines in English about the place and the season. Every card is written by hand, one at a time.

  3. 03

It goes out by air mail

Posted from Kyoto. Most cards arrive within 7–14 days.

Details

Before you order

What is on the card

On the front, a photograph taken by us in Kyoto that season. On the back, a few lines in English about the place: what it looked like, what it sounded like, what the month is doing here. Then your address, and a stamp.

Every card is written by hand, one at a time, so no two are identical. The photograph for a given month is chosen by us.

Timing

A single card or a gift is posted within 3 business days of your order. A subscription is written and posted in the same week each month for twelve months, and your first card goes out in the next posting week after you subscribe.

Air mail from Japan usually takes 7–14 days, though this varies by country and season. If a card is for a birthday or an anniversary, order it three to four weeks ahead — international post cannot be timed to the day.

Where it goes

You enter the mailing address at checkout, in your own country’s format. It can be your address or someone else’s. Please check it carefully: a card that goes astray because the address was wrong is not covered by our free re-send.

Sending one as a gift

A gift is a single card sent to someone else, at the same price. At checkout you tell us it is a gift, give us their address, and write the line you want on it — a name, a greeting, a sentence. We copy it out by hand, in your name, underneath the note about the place. Nothing on the card shows what it cost.

A subscription can be addressed to someone else too. Enter their address at checkout and a card reaches them every month.

Changing an address, or stopping

Your mailing address can be changed at any time. Tell us before the first week of the month and the next card goes to the new address.

A subscription can be cancelled by you, immediately, in the customer portal. It stops at the end of the period you have already paid for, and the cards you paid for still come.

The price

A single card is $15. A year of postcards is $99 — $8.25 per card, the lowest price we offer. International postage is included either way.
